Are You Getting the Most Out of Your sony android tv remote?
We all know that we rely on our electronics more than we realize. We don’t realize how much we depend on them until it’s too late. We use them more than we think. We can only be so self-aware.
For example, an android phone can only be so self-aware after the owner has owned it. It’s the same with our televisions. If we had a new one, we would probably want to spend more time in front of it (and with it) to make sure it was set up the way we wanted it.
Sony has announced its upcoming smart TV, the Sony Android TV. If it is as good as the ones from LG and Samsung (and better), the smart TV will be the one most people will buy.
I really love the idea of the android tv remote. It’s so easy to pick up. When I first saw the “discover new apps” button, I laughed. It’s actually a remote that can be easily picked up and used to open menus on the screen. But like with many other technologies, there are issues with the implementation and usability.
The Sony Android TV does have a few issues though. I think it is the biggest issue. Because of the fact that it works on Android (which is a lot like iOS), there is a lot of lag while the remote is being turned on and the apps are being downloaded. This means that in a time of the day when you are having a really intense TV binge that you are doing a lot of TV watching, the remote can be as slow as molasses.
Now I know how it is when you’re watching TV and you turn on the volume and all you see are the commercials you can’t understand what they are saying, and maybe that’s your problem. But what happens when you have a really intense TV binge that you know you’ll want to watch something else, like an episode of The Sopranos? Then that is when you want the remote to be responsive.
For the first few months of buying a new smartphone, the remote is a non-issue. But once you start using the remote to navigate menus and control apps, it becomes a problem. This is because the default apps that the remote supports are not good for programming. For example, the remote that comes with the Samsung Galaxy S 3 has a horrible default app called Music. In it, you can only play music through the Music app.
This is a problem because if we want to change the programs the remote supports we have to re-code the menus that were built for the old menus before we got the new ones. In most cases, we have to do this manually because nothing else has the ability to change the menus.
That said, if you love the old menus and you want to try these new menus, we’ve got some good news. There are a few ways we can access and change the menus. One of the easiest ways is to use the new Samsung remote app. It has the ability to easily re-code the menus you use already.
Sony lets you do this by enabling the “manage menus” option in the new Samsung remote app. But, you have to make sure you have the “manage menus” option enabled in the old Sony remote app because the new Samsung app can only re-code menus that you already have.
