This week I want to talk about the concept of “self-awareness” which I think can help us all understand what we are feeling and what we are doing.
How many of you have ever picked up a book and thought, “Wow, this is fascinating!”? Well, I bet you didn’t realize you were reading about yourself. You may have thought “Wow, I wish I was like this.” or “I don’t like this.” or “I wish I was this cool.
Well, we’re all like this, really. It’s something many of us have experienced, many of us wish we could go back into time, to go into the past and change what we did to ourselves.
If you’ve ever felt like you were on your way to a bad place, you are probably feeling something similar in our current moment. This is because our own brains are essentially a time loop and we are all basically stuck in the mind of our own past.
The only way to get out of the loop is to change what we did in the past and what we are doing now. If we were to start over, we would probably end up in the same place that we currently are. In other words, starting over is not a choice, it is a necessity. By starting over, we can change the past and move forward into a better future.
I have to admit that I’ve gotten in the habit of thinking about my past (which is a time loop) and then thinking about my present and trying to figure out what I need to do in the future to make it better. As I’ve gotten older now, I’ve been able to see the good in the bad and I’ve learned to do the impossible. As bad as it is, the next few years are going to be worse, and I don’t know how to fix it.
It’s not just the badness we see in our future that makes us want to get back in the past, it’s also the possibility of what could have been. We don’t realize we want to get back into the past because we never saw the very best version of the past we wanted to go back to. But for the rest of us, its the fear of what could have been.
A lot of people think of the past, and the future, and the present as the same thing. But the future and the past aren’t the same thing. The future is the idea of what could have been, the past is the idea of what could have been. The only way the future can exist in the past is if what we want to be is the very thing that could have been. But that is a very dangerous way to view the past.
The fear we fear can be the very thing that moves us to act. It can be the reason we live each day. Its the reason we live each day because we want to live this day. The fear we have is what makes us want to live. What we fear is what makes us want to live.
We are each born with a future. We cannot know what is going to happen, but we can and should try to be aware of it, to plan for it, to consider it. We can be afraid of the future, but we should be afraid of our fears. What we should be afraid of is our fear, because fear turns us into slaves of it.
