I recently found this post by Lisa. I was trying to figure out if the three levels of self-awareness were the same for every person or just me. So I read it and it got me thinking. I thought it would be fun to share my thoughts on this topic.
As I thought about it, I realized that the three levels of self-awareness are not the same for everyone. It’s not just us, I noticed. Even though some of us don’t want to think too much, it’s hard to stay on autopilot for very long.
A lot of us have a tendency when we’re on autopilot to worry ourselves into a rut. You don’t want to think about a lot of things, but those things actually have a huge impact on our lives. For example, if you think about your boss or your friend, you just might find yourself avoiding them. As soon as you think about them, you might want to avoid them.
For most of us, the most important things in our lives are the ones we do consciously. If we can’t think about them, we have no control over them. Unfortunately, thinking about something can be difficult with our busy schedules. When we are on autopilot, we often have trouble even thinking about the things we want to think about.
The problem is that our thoughts aren’t the only things that control us. Our actions are also important. We see this in action when we are running for cover or we are driving and we feel the urgency to drive home safely so we don’t get into a car accident. This is called “the heuristic” and is the same heuristic that causes us to avoid things we don’t want to do.
By the way, I am a firm believer that most of our actions and thoughts are controlled by our brains. In some ways this makes sense because when our minds are busy, they don’t have time to think about anything other than what is in front of them.
That said, I am also convinced that most of our actions and thoughts are caused by an unconscious part of our minds. For instance, it could be that we are trying to avoid a car accident by not driving. But if we are driving and feel a strong sense of urgency to drive safely, we then feel we must act on the idea we dont want to drive so we feel we must do something else. This is called the heuristic.
Most of our thoughts and actions are caused by the unconscious. Our minds work this way because they are hard-wired to do so. An unconscious part of our mind is hard-wired to feel the urge to be in a certain way, which is why we usually only have to be aware of it for a short while (10 seconds for example).
The heuristic is very common in self-awareness, but it is not always conscious. We sometimes feel the urge to be in the way of something that makes us feel uncomfortable, like being followed by a security guard. We don’t always think about it consciously, but we don’t have to. If we are aware of it for only a few seconds, that is when we feel the urge to act.
