A recent Bloomberg article points to the fact that the number of consumer durable jobs in the US has hit a record high — the highest since the series began in 1990. The report says that “the surge in demand is due in part to growing economic uncertainty and the expiration of government tax credit programs.

The Bloomberg report doesn’t say exactly how many consumer durable jobs are available, but it does say that the demand is growing, and that the number will likely rise into the next decade. So in some ways it’s even a better time to be in the consumer durables business than it is a while ago.

With so many new products coming out in the last few years, it’s a little surprising that the number of jobs available hasnt increased. But the demand has, as evidenced by the Bloomberg report. Sure, it looks like the demand for workers has increased, but who really knows how many it is? We do know, however, that the demand for certain lines of consumer durables (think: phones, laptops, and tablets) is growing faster than for others.

As of the most recent quarter, there were 9,818,000 full-time jobs in the consumer durables industry, 4.3% of the nation’s total workforce. The most popular job category is manufacturing, with 27.6% of the workforce.

So it looks like the demand for consumer durables is strong, but the number of jobs being created right now is not.

I’m still not sure where the demand for some of these lines of consumer durables came from. The only thing I’m certain of is that they’re a little more complicated to manufacture than other lines, like the Apple iPhone, for example. I can’t wait to see what sort of gadgets the game’s designers come up with, so that we can finally see the last of the game’s characters.

The more I hear about the new games, the more I find myself looking for a job. In a way, the more I talk to the game designers, the more I wonder if they are all working on some sort of job. Maybe it’s just an occupational choice, but I’m starting to notice I seem to have a lot of free time these days and no job to speak of. I’m not sure how this is even possible.
