I’m not really a fan of labeling our thinking and reactions. Most times we label our thoughts and reactions in a way that is not necessarily accurate, but often we are not aware of this.
The problem is that people often are not aware of the labels they are putting on things. This is because labeling is a pretty basic task that most of us are not aware of. But a lot of the time we are not even aware that we have any labels on us at all. And because labels, such as these, are often not as accurate as we would like, we are not usually aware of them.
We are all aware of labels. But this is not the point of labeling. Labeling is about making it so that our reactions are not misdirected. And that is the exact opposite of what a lot of us are doing when we are just reacting to events.
A lot of us are reacting to events that are not events in the way that they appear to be. For instance, we think that we are not reacting to an earthquake by saying, “Uh oh, the house seems to be shaking like crazy.” But that is not the way that an earthquake is supposed to make us feel. That is a very different reaction. A lot of us are reacting to a tsunami by running away from it.
It sounds like you are reacting to an earthquake by running from it. We are not.
It is true that we are not in the way that we are supposed to be. We are not reacting to an earthquake by saying, Uh oh, there is an earthquake. (It’s not a good idea to use the same argument over and over again because it will get us nowhere.) But we are not reactivating our muscles. We are not sitting down calmly and saying, “Oh, that’s just what I did.
The point is, if you’re on the way to recovery, there is a lot of movement and change that you can do on your own. I’d advise you to take some time to really think about all the ways you can change, not just one small change, but a whole lot of changes. Then you can be a part of the change you want.
As soon as I heard the words “recovery,” I felt like the same old me, but with a new perspective. This new one is not about me trying to pretend that I have changed. I am a different person because of that change. But because I have an opportunity to get back to the way that I was, and to do something that I love, I am going to do it.
We live in a culture where we expect more from people who are supposed to be in charge of our lives, but they always seem a little lost. The change we are discussing here is a huge one. It involves a lot of change, and yet it is so small it would not even make a dent in the way people live now. That is because it is a change that is so easy for people to make that it doesn’t need any more work.
This isn’t to say that people should stop doing what they are already doing. But we believe that the kind of change that we are describing is achievable and achievable quickly. The only question is how much we are willing to pay for it.
